Infected by Trauma: A 'group process framework' for helping therapists address the traumatic impact of working with traumatized patients from a Northern Irish experience.
@ Boston College
Presented by the Rice Memorial Fund Of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy Foundation and The Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture, Boston College, Lynch School of Education.
This Conference presented the process and findings of a Participatory Action Research Inquiry exploring the group supervision experience of a multi-disciplinary trauma resource team from the north of Ireland. Receiving referrals for patients suffering from severe symptoms of 'Troubles* related trauma' the team offer interventions from physiotherapy, counselling, clinical psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy and occupational therapy.
The Conference was of interest to practitioners from helping professions engaged in high impact settings including trauma, sexual abuse, emergency services, social welfare etc.
We considered the application of a 'process framework' for supervision that can help professionals open themselves to the impact of empathic connection with patients' symptoms, make sense of that impact and then use the new understanding to facilitate therapeutic insight.
Through an interactive format the Conference:
• Introduced the context of the study and tell the story of the therapists experiences
• Presented to attendees the 'process framework' and its theoretical base
• Portrayed the application of the 'process framework' through a demonstration supervision group
• Conducted dialogue with respondents and participants on the application to other clinical, multi-disciplinary and cultural settings.
